Recent research suggests that exposure to blue light before sleep can distort your natural (circadian) rhythm and cause an inability to fall asleep. The cause is the photoreceptor in the eyes, called melanopsin. This receptor is sensitive to a narrow band of blue light in the 460-480 nm range that can suppress the production of melatonin, a hormone responsible for your healthy sleep-wake cycles. Experimental scientific studies have shown that the average person reads from a tablet or smart device.
